I always wonder how I can be better as a Mother, as a Wife and a friend. I *could* pay money and go somewhere to get “perspective'” on how I can relate to my children and be “PRESENT” in their lives. I could. OR I can use my General Conference Talks as my reference point. My scriptures as my Guide. My RS Lessons as my compass. I love the fact that although we always seem to be seeking for something “more” in life, Heavenly Father has already organized things for us so that we don’t have to spend money on things that are not necessary or important.

I think if I make an effort to allow General Conference to be my Spiritual Retreat for myself AND for my Family I will be much happier. These talks are all SUPER STUPENDOUSLY AMAZING!! I mean, “We are Daughters of Our Heavenly Father” reaffirms my own personal divinity and encourages me to “return to Virtue”.  “For Peace at Home” teaches me principles that will help my family grow closer together and to be happy. “The Hope of God’s Light” gives me encouragement so that when I am feeling down or sad or burdened by the weight of my circumstances I can feel renewed in the Love of my Heavenly Father and focus on what is truly important. “Lord I Believe” helps me by giving me tools to  increase my faith and to recognize the power of the faith that I already have. “Marriage: Watch & Learn” gives me specific ways I can strengthen my marriage and my relationships with others. “Obedience Brings Blessings” is devoted to helping me understand the importance of being obedient to my Heavenly Father.

Making Conference Part of Our Lives                download

Another great “Retreat” is attending the Temple OFTEN. What an incredible way to remind ourselves of what is important and what our Eternal Goals are and should be and how we can realign ourselves to the path Heavenly Father asks of us.

Do I need to spend money on ANYTHING to buoy up my Spirit? No, the scriptures themselves are full of enlightenment and knowledge that I need to be the best person, daughter, sister, friend, wife, mother, grandmother, visiting teacher –> that I can possibly be.

Do I really need to pay someone to tell me how to be “PRESENT” and “ENGAGED” with my children and family? No, these things come naturally as I strive to do what’s right. There is no counsel more important than that of the Prophets and Apostles that speak to us.

General Conference has just passed. I don’t believe there was one talk that didn’t touch me. I loved them all. I have already watched some of them a second time. I love Conference and the feelings that it brings into my life and the life of my family. It isn’t too early to start planning my General Conference Retreat for April 2014!! Only 6 more months to go!!! :)

Teaching and Learning the Gospel

Faith, Family, Relief

Jesus Christ was a master teacher. He set the example for us as He “taught women in multitudes and as individuals, on the street and by the seashore, at the well and in their homes. He showed loving-kindness toward them and healed them and their family members.”¹

He taught Martha and Mary and “invited them to become His disciples and partake of salvation, ‘that good part’ [Luke 10:42] that would never be taken from them.”²

In our latter-day scriptures, the Lord commanded us to “teach one another the doctrine of the kingdom” (D&C 88:77). Of teaching and learning doctrine, Cheryl A. Esplin, second counselor in the Primary general presidency, said, “Learning to fully understand the doctrines of the gospel is a process of a lifetime and comes ‘line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little’ (2 Nephi 28:30).”³

As we learn, study, and pray, we will teach with the power of the Holy Ghost, who will carry our message “unto the hearts of the children of men [and women]” (2 Nephi 33:1).

From Our History

Our past prophets have reminded us as women that we have an important role as teachers in the home and Church. In September 1979, President Spencer W. Kimball (1895–1985) asked us to become “sister scriptorians.” He said: “Become scholars of the scriptures—not to put others down, but to lift them up! After all, who has any greater need to ‘treasure up’ the truths of the gospel (on which they may call in their moments of need) than do women and mothers who do so much nurturing and teaching?”⁴

We are all teachers and learners. When we teach from the scriptures and the words of our living prophets, we can help others come unto Christ. When we engage in the learning process by asking meaningful questions and then listening, we can find answers that meet our personal needs.

Internet Safety

As a Mother, I believe in taking precautions and not taking for granted certain rights or obligations as a parent. This is doubly certain for the internet.

First, I just want to put out there that even your cell phones, tablets, game cubes, etc. can pose Internet hazards. It isn’t just the computer these days. I have heard of instances where children's’ friends bring their cell phones over and are sharing their “inappropriate things” with the Children in the bedroom or somewhere else off by themselves. I think our children are too priceless and important to allow them to fall victim to the pitfalls of the internet while they are in our care and keeping. They have all of their adult life to make their own life choices, let them understand the responsibility that comes with internet use. Give them direction and leadership so they don’t fall victim to the ugly side of the net. Covenant Eyes is a resource for Windows, Mac OS, Android, & iPhones, iPod, & iPads.  

Online Safety Tips:

!) FAMILY COMPUTER – don’t allow anyone in the family to have access to the computer in bedrooms or private areas where they can be seen by everyone. I hate having the big ole computer desk in my family room – but, I want to make sure we are all aware of what we are all doing, at all times.

2) Limit Sites and Social Media – we are certainly aware of protecting our children's identity online. Filters are an excellent way of protecting your children from some real dangers.

3) Encouraging Productive Online Time: Education has it’s place in the internet and there are piles of free and priced offerings on the web to engage our children. You just need to make sure that the sites are safe and not inappropriate for YOUR children.

4) Communication: This is a big one – we have spoken to each of our children regarding what they should do if they DO come across inappropriate things on the internet/email/etc. They need to X out or shut the computer off. Then they need to come talk to us about what happened: ie what they were doing when it popped up (just so we know how to prevent it from happening again). We have told them that if they come talk to us right away we can discuss it and talk about it. If we come across it later, well, there will be consequences to hiding it.

5) Knowing passwords and Checking Accounts – This may seem like an invasion of privacy and a child’s rights – but, I know who I am ultimately accountable to for how and what I raise my children to be. It is a good idea to randomly check accounts and make sure what is going on.

6) Know what everyone is doing online and limiting access for certain amounts of time at certain times of the day. You can set parental controls that are password protected. Excellent for keeping your children safe even when you can’t be right on top of them.

7) Have a buddy system in place for younger children – if you can’t sit with them and help them then you need to ask an older sibling to help.

 

Whatever your internet family habits are, make sure your children are always safe from the ugly side of the world wide web. Educate yourself and then your children on all safety matters. I want to help them be effective, responsible adults and that includes helping them be accountable for their choices as children, youth and young adults. Sometimes, just helping children realize natural consequences to choices they make can help them be better equipped to be able to make better informed choices.

Homemade Baby Wipes

Ingredients:

o Plastic container with a tight-fitting lid

o Thick, strong roll of white paper towels (thick, strong and soft and cloth like)

o Sharp serrated knife

o 2 cups water (you can use distilled)

o 2 tbsp. baby shampoo or baby wash

o 1 tbsp. baby oil, coconut oil or olive oil (your choice)

o (feel free to add one or two drops of essential oil to the mixture)

Instructions:

· Cut your paper towel roll in half and remove inner cardboard tube

· Mix the liquid ingredients together in your container

· Place one of the paper towel halves inside the container (top down)

· Place lid on container

· Wait about ten minutes and turn container over

· Let sit for another 10 minutes

· Once the paper towels are completely saturated – you can pull the first towel from the inside of the roll

Welfare

The purposes of Church welfare are to help members become self-reliant, to care for the poor and needy, and to give service. Welfare is central to the work of Relief Society. President Henry B. Eyring, First Counselor in the First Presidency, has taught:

“[The Lord] has from the beginning of time provided ways for His disciples to help. He has invited His children to consecrate their time, their means, and themselves to join with Him in serving others. …

“He has invited and commanded us to participate in His work to lift up those in need. We make a covenant to do that in the waters of baptism and in the holy temples of God. We renew the covenant on Sundays when we partake of the sacrament.”¹

Under the direction of the bishop or branch president, local leaders assist with spiritual and temporal welfare. Opportunities to serve often begin with visiting teachers who seek inspiration to know how to respond to the needs of each sister they visit.

From Our History

On June 9, 1842, the Prophet Joseph Smith charged the sisters in Relief Society to “relieve the poor” and to “save souls.”² These goals are still at the heart of Relief Society and are expressed in our motto, “Charity never faileth” (1 Corinthians 13:8).

Our fifth Relief Society general president, Emmeline B. Wells, and her counselors launched this motto in 1913 as a reminder of our founding principles: “We do declare it our purpose to … [hold] fast to the inspired teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith when he revealed the plan by which women were to be empowered through the calling of the priesthood to be grouped into suitable organizations for the purpose of ministering to the sick, assisting the needy, comforting the aged, warning the unwary, and succoring the orphans.”³

Today the Relief Society has a worldwide reach as sisters extend charity, the pure love of Christ, to their neighbors (see Moroni 7:46–47).

April 2007 General Conference Talk – Sunday Morning Session by Julie B. Beck

 

There is eternal influence and power in motherhood.

In the Book of Mormon we read about 2,000 exemplary young men who were exceedingly valiant, courageous, and strong. “Yea, they were men of truth and soberness, for they had been taught to keep the commandments of God and to walk uprightly before him” (Alma 53:21). These faithful young men paid tribute to their mothers. They said, “Our mothers knew it” (Alma 56:48). I would suspect that the mothers of Captain Moroni, Mosiah, Mormon, and other great leaders also knew.

The responsibility mothers have today has never required more vigilance. More than at any time in the history of the world, we need mothers who know. Children are being born into a world where they “wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Ephesians 6:12).1 However, mothers need not fear. When mothers know who they are and who God is and have made covenants with Him, they will have great power and influence for good on their children.

 

Mothers Who Know Bear Children

Mothers who know desire to bear children. Whereas in many cultures in the world children are “becoming less valued,”2 in the culture of the gospel we still believe in having children. Prophets, seers, and revelators who were sustained at this conference have declared that “God’s commandment for His children to multiply and replenish the earth remains in force.”3 President Ezra Taft Benson taught that young couples should not postpone having children and that “in the eternal perspective, children—not possessions, not position, not prestige—are our greatest jewels.”4

Faithful daughters of God desire children. In the scriptures we read of Eve (see Moses 4:26), Sarah (see Genesis 17:16), Rebekah (see Genesis 24:60), and Mary (see 1 Nephi 11:13–20), who were foreordained to be mothers before children were born to them. Some women are not given the responsibility of bearing children in mortality, but just as Hannah of the Old Testament prayed fervently for her child (see 1 Samuel 1:11), the value women place on motherhood in this life and the attributes of motherhood they attain here will rise with them in the Resurrection (see D&C 130:18). Women who desire and work toward that blessing in this life are promised they will receive it for all eternity, and eternity is much, much longer than mortality. There is eternal influence and power in motherhood.

Mothers Who Know Honor Sacred Ordinances and Covenants

Mothers who know honor sacred ordinances and covenants. I have visited sacrament meetings in some of the poorest places on the earth where mothers have dressed with great care in their Sunday best despite walking for miles on dusty streets and using worn-out public transportation. They bring daughters in clean and ironed dresses with hair brushed to perfection; their sons wear white shirts and ties and have missionary haircuts. These mothers know they are going to sacrament meeting, where covenants are renewed. These mothers have made and honor temple covenants. They know that if they are not pointing their children to the temple, they are not pointing them toward desired eternal goals. These mothers have influence and power.

 

Mothers Who Know Are Nurturers

Mothers who know are nurturers. This is their special assignment and role under the plan of happiness.5 To nurture means to cultivate, care for, and make grow. Therefore, mothers who know create a climate for spiritual and temporal growth in their homes. Another word for nurturing is homemaking. Homemaking includes cooking, washing clothes and dishes, and keeping an orderly home. Home is where women have the most power and influence; therefore, Latter-day Saint women should be the best homemakers in the world. Working beside children in homemaking tasks creates opportunities to teach and model qualities children should emulate. Nurturing mothers are knowledgeable, but all the education women attain will avail them nothing if they do not have the skill to make a home that creates a climate for spiritual growth. Growth happens best in a “house of order,” and women should pattern their homes after the Lord’s house (see D&C 109). Nurturing requires organization, patience, love, and work. Helping growth occur through nurturing is truly a powerful and influential role bestowed on women.

 

Mothers Who Know Are Leaders

Mothers who know are leaders. In equal partnership with their husbands, they lead a great and eternal organization. These mothers plan for the future of their organization. They plan for missions, temple marriages, and education. They plan for prayer, scripture study, and family home evening. Mothers who know build children into future leaders and are the primary examples of what leaders look like. They do not abandon their plan by succumbing to social pressure and worldly models of parenting. These wise mothers who know are selective about their own activities and involvement to conserve their limited strength in order to maximize their influence where it matters most.

Mothers Who Know Are Teachers

Mothers who know are always teachers. Since they are not babysitters, they are never off duty. A well-taught friend told me that he did not learn anything at church that he had not already learned at home. His parents used family scripture study, prayer, family home evening, mealtimes, and other gatherings to teach. Think of the power of our future missionary force if mothers considered their homes as a pre–missionary training center. Then the doctrines of the gospel taught in the MTC would be a review and not a revelation. That is influence; that is power.

 

Mothers Who Know Do Less

Mothers who know do less. They permit less of what will not bear good fruit eternally. They allow less media in their homes, less distraction, less activity that draws their children away from their home. Mothers who know are willing to live on less and consume less of the world’s goods in order to spend more time with their children—more time eating together, more time working together, more time reading together, more time talking, laughing, singing, and exemplifying. These mothers choose carefully and do not try to choose it all. Their goal is to prepare a rising generation of children who will take the gospel of Jesus Christ into the entire world. Their goal is to prepare future fathers and mothers who will be builders of the Lord’s kingdom for the next 50 years. That is influence; that is power.

 

Mothers Who Know Stand Strong and Immovable

Who will prepare this righteous generation of sons and daughters? Latter-day Saint women will do this—women who know and love the Lord and bear testimony of Him, women who are strong and immovable and who do not give up during difficult and discouraging times. We are led by an inspired prophet of God who has called upon the women of the Church to “stand strong and immovable for that which is correct and proper under the plan of the Lord.”6 He has asked us to “begin in [our] own homes”7 to teach children the ways of truth. Latter-day Saint women should be the very best in the world at upholding, nurturing, and protecting families. I have every confidence that our women will do this and will come to be known as mothers who “knew” (Alma 56:48). In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

I LOVE this talk! I don’t know why it didn’t ‘hit’ me harder at the time. Perhaps I need to hear it more now, than then?? Who knows! But, once again, I am reminded of the importance of Motherhood – not just motherhood for Mom’s who bear children but for ALL Women. There are many mothers who mother MY children – they are VERY important to me and I appreciate them and thank them.

Now for me to move forward and continue to try to pattern MY life after this talk. I AM a Mother Who Knows! I have a very strong testimony of the importance of Motherhood {& Parenthood} and all that being a Mother {Parent} entails.
